August 23, 2021

Want to visit your favorite museum for free? Or perhaps you'd like to check out one you've never been to before? Well, you are in luck because the 17th annual Museum Day is happening on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Magazine, in which participating museums across the country open their doors for free to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket.

The annual event allows museums, zoos, and cultural centers from all 50 states to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities, which offer free admission every day. This year’s event is sponsored by The Quaker Oats Company.

Participating New Jersey + Nearby PA Museums include:

  • Crane House & Historic YWCA (Montclair)
  • East Jersey Old Town Village (Piscataway)
  • Historic Smithville Mansion (Eastampton)
  • Morven Museum & Garden (Princeton)
  • Red Brick Schoolhouse Museum aka Mount Vernon School (Chatham)
  • Monroe County Historical Association (Stroudsburg, PA)
  • National Canal Museum (Easton, PA)
  • National Museum of Industrial History (Bethlehem, PA)

Museum-goers can head to the Museum Day website to download one free ticket, good for two people. Each ticket grants the ticket holder, and one guest, free access to any participating museum on September 18th. One ticket is permitted per email address.

This year’s theme, Experience America, represents the return to, and resurgence of, our country's diverse cultural experiences, in the safest possible way.

Things to Remember

  • You MUST have a downloaded ticket in advance to attend for free
  • Be sure to check the hours and policies of each museum, as they vary by location
  • Special exhibits, food, parking, etc. are not included in your Museum Day ticket

Museum Day tickets will be available for download at smithsonianmag.com/museumday beginning August 18, 2021. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums continue to register, can be found at smithsonianmag.com/museumday.
