Westys Gymnastics started more than 25 years ago in Sparta, and 8 years later built a class of the art gymnastics facility in Franklin, NJ. We were growing and our teams needed a space designed for a higher level of training. This allowed us to install a foam safety training area, which allowed our athletes to train for higher-level skills. It attracts all our students and is especially utilized for birthday parties, which is one of the kids' favorite things to do.
Westys still has a presence in Sparta. Dick Malmsrtum and Raquel Dasilva have been gracious to allow Westys to continue two to three six-week sessions in the Field House. This allows us to train our Preschool and Recreational students. Team and Pre-Team will do beam and dance for clinics or extra practices. The field house is only 12 minutes from our Franklin/Hardyston location. The two locations work perfect together.
Westys couches can teach all levels and all teams. We are part of USAIGC our gymnastic competitor program. Our gymnasts train 2-3 days a week. When we are competing again, we will compete all over our country, and also internationally. The team has been winning state, regional and national titles since we began our team 28 years ago. Some of our gymnasts have gone on to compete in college.
We have 4 former team gymnasts that are Westys coaches in training. They will become some of the best coaches and teachers.
WESTYS COACHES - All coaches did gymnastics in college, and achieved many titles and won many competitions during their careers. Westys is most proud of who they all are. Extremely kind, caring, and most of all always looking to make sure each child is treated equally. Coaches provide the drills and techniques to achieve success with all their students.
- Marisa Bartone Kurth was a team gymnast who competed in college, then came back to coach at Westys and now is becoming a gymnastic judge. Her full-time position is with ADP. She coaches part time at Westys with many responsibilities, especially with the team and meets.
- Wendy Panicucci has been with Westys from day one. All Preschool-aged children have such a gleam in their eyes when they are in her class. When Couch Wendy is not there athletes say “where is miss Wendy and when is she coming back”. She is the Preschool and Pre-team queen of gymnastics.
- Dan Hipper is our Ninja expert, in addition to Recreational, Tumbling, private lessons, and coaches our Power Team. Dan has great patience and energy, and his goal is for everyone to achieve excellence in gymnastics. His specialty is the back handspring. Dan is a Physical Education teacher at Hilltop. He also holds down a para-legal position in New York on weekends.
- Coach Miguel Ortiz strictly works with our Senior Team. He is a proud father of three, and his eldest daughter just received a full-ride scholarship to college in Connecticut. Coach Miguel is an electrician at West Point.
- Danielle Oehrlich is the proud owner of Westys Gymnastics. She has a degree in Physical Education, a minor in athletic training at Montclair University, in addition to her Real Estate license. Danielle is the proud mom of Cheyanne Oehrlich who is the Gym Director of Gymnastics Plus in Boca Ratan Florida. Danielle's’ vision is for every student to leave their class feeling great, with the feeling that they have achieved or mastered a skill or jump that they have worked hard in class to learn. All students are learning at their own individual strengths and timeline.
Westys Gymnastics has been open since July 2020. Our cleaning and CDC guidelines are being followed. We take temperatures, ask standard COVID-19 related questions according to guidelines. Children wear their masks in the lobby and restrooms. All staff is required to wear a mask. Westys continues to do deep cleaning, we have been using a fogger to disinfect the air, a light wand, and steramine. Most important a ledger to keep track of our cleaning throughout the day. These are not new protocols for Westys, we have just found better tools and products to keep the gym clean and safe.
