The Weekend Bag is an initiative created and run by Isobel Costello, now a Senior at Newton High School. Four years ago Isobel was a Freshman and was as excited as any other kid to begin this new adventure called High School. School was great, but as the weeks went by, she started to notice a trend in conversations during the school day as well as her new friends talking to her. Some of her peers were talking about going home and not having enough food or hygiene products that most teenagers don’t ever have to worry about like body soap, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.
Isobel fundraised and met with local businesses to get donations to help fill her Weekend Bags. Isobel fills the bags needed and delivers them to her school to be distributed to the students participating in this program. The students' identity is anonymous as to not put added stress on the student. As other schools adopt this program the goal is to have a school liaison work with Isobel in getting those bags to the students from that school.
Isobel’s future goal for this program is to have it expand district and to help as many peers in need. She is reaching out to schools throughout the county setting up meetings with school officials to see if this program could help kids in need in their schools. She is hoping to get sponsorship from local businesses to help in getting the items needed for the Weekend Bags as well as spreading awareness of this huge need in our communities. As Isobel says “Being a kid is stressful enough without having to worry about going home and whether or not you will be able to eat or take a shower or brush your teeth ”.
