Make Your Own Memorial Day Shirt

May 23, 2019

Moms, this is seriously the easiest craft you and your kids are going to love to make.  Easiest.  Freezer paper is my new BFF.  I have no idea what the actual intention of "freezer" paper is, other than endless amazing crafts.  And once you try my project you're going to have genius ideas popping into your head of all the ways to customize and design more!  And when you do, I'd love to see them!

Here is a great project just in time for Memorial Day!  Look at the big smiles across my kiddos little faces!  Those smiles were - by no means - forced, coerced, or bribed to do that.  They totally loved their little masterpieces and excited to wear them.

So here we go...

Materials Needed:

T-shirt

fabric paint

freezer paper (found mine at my local grocery store)

iron

painting tools  *suggestions - pencil eraser, pom poms, little fingers

cardstock or card board

chip clips or clothespins

Instructions:

1.  Plan out your design.  We printed a star template for our project, traced it onto the freezer paper and carefully cut it out.

2.  Mommy's turn! Preheat your iron to high.  Align your cutout onto your t-shirt (you will only get one shot at this once you lay your iron down - otherwise start back at #1.)  Pay careful attention to seal your tips and corners completely to your shirt.  This will assure a crisp and solid design when all is done.

3.  Once the shirt has cooled down, open it and slide a piece of cardstock or cardboard inside to prevent paint from bleeding through to the back.  Fold the shirt around the cardboard, leaving the area you will be designing and clip to hold it all together.

4.  Ok now it's time to get Funky!  Choose your painting tool (we used pom poms) and begin!  The most important tip to this project is to completely cover the perimeter of your cutout -otherwise, it's not going to look right.  It's totally okay to get paint on your cutout.

5.  Once you've finished with the paint and love your design, let it dry.

6.  Now watch the magic!  Carefully lift a corner of the cutout by slipping your nail under to break the seal and slowly peel off.

7.  AMAZING, right?!!

8.  Want to add more?  Grab a paint marker or puffy paint to write your child's name and 2016 inside the design!

Are you hooked on freezer paper now?  Me too!  We do a lot of camping throughout the summer and I'm always on the lookout for fun projects to take along with us.  This happens to be perfect as there isn't much at all to take and once I figure out what freezer paper is really intended for, it could have another purpose too.

Oh, and here's a frugal (smart) mom tip:  That shirt little Nicky dripped a red ice pop on that will forever be stained?  Before you turn it into a dust rag, give it a new life with this project!  Now get going on your own!
