Toddler Travel Tips – from Tink’s Travels!

Foster a love of exploring the world by starting them young – and save your sanity at the same time. These tips have helped me to have pleasant travel experiences – or I learned them myself the hard way! Regardless, let me share a few tips that have helped me.

  • Allow extra time!! For everything!! Few things are as stressful as feeling rushed. Take the extra time to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

  • Set expectations before you go. Let your child know what to expect whenever possible. Flying? Set up chairs really close together, with a really narrow aisle in between, and role play.

  • Pack favorite toys. Bring new toys – gift wrap for extra excitement. Present a new toy every hour or so during the trip as needed.

  • Bring along travel-friendly low-sugar snacks that you know your kids will eat. Pack more than you think you’ll need in the event of flight delays.

  • Get to the airport early. Be organized and patient going through security. After security, find an empty gate and let kids play. Let them move, run around (without disturbing other travelers, hopefully) – tire them out so the sleep on the plane!!

  • No matter what your vacation destination, have a loose plan of what you want to see and do, then plan to be flexible. Go with the flow. Take time to smell the roses. Or try on the elephant hats!!

  • Stick to their sleep/wake/meals schedule as closely as possible. No one likes a hangry toddler!

  • Packing tips – nightlight, over-the-door shoe organizer for organizing bathroom essentials, pop-up hamper, clothespins to clip maps/itineraries to stroller visors, extra diapers, lots of ‘em. Don’t forget to pack the most important thing – your patience!!

Enjoy this special together time. Take the trips, make those memories now. Will your toddler remember all the details? Unlikely – but you will. They will delight in seeing pictures and hearing the stories for years to come.
